Bon voyagers on trains, planes surged over last year

The number of people who traveled on major train services and domestic and international flights over the Bon summer holiday period rose from a year before, according to data from major domestic airlines and six passenger service firms in the Japan Railways Group.

About 3.28 million people flew on domestic flights during the 10-day period through Sunday, up 11.4 percent from the year-on-year, while some 520,000 took international flights to and from Japan, up 6.3 percent.

Passengers on the JR Group’s shinkansen and other limited express trains increased 3 percent to about 12.56 million.

A number of travelers are believed to have visited Mount Fuji.

A Japan Airlines official said that the number of passengers taking its international flights rose because travelers from abroad increased thanks to the yen’s decline.
