Brazilian federal police have arrested a man who fled while on trial in the country over the 2006 murders of his girlfriend and her two sons in Shizuoka Prefecture, a media report said.

Neves Edilson Donizeti, a 50-year-old Brazilian national, was arrested Thursday at his vacation home in Minas Gerais state, according to the report. His trial is now expected to reopen.

Donizeti was wanted over the three murders in the city of Yaizu, Shizuoka Prefecture, in December 2006. He was arrested in Sao Paulo state in January 2008, but he went into hiding after being released from detention that July while still on trial.

Japan has asked Brazil to try Donizeti due to the absence of a bilateral extradition treaty,
