German trains get Channel Tunnel OK

German railway Deutsche Bahn has been given the green light for its passenger trains to use the Channel Tunnel between France and England, operator Eurotunnel said Friday.

After three years of studies, the commission in charge of tunnel security has given Deutsche Bahn permission to run its trains under the English Channel. “Twenty years after its opening, the public authorities are finally opening the Channel Tunnel to all,” said Eurotunnel CEO Jacques Gounon.

The opening of competition for railways using the Channel Tunnel will not likely take place soon, with first service projected to start in 2016.
