PM2.5 excessive at most monitors

JIJI

Air pollution caused by microparticle PM2.5 exceeded environmental criteria at more than 70 percent of the measuring stations across Japan in fiscal 2011, the Environment Ministry said.

Many of the observatory stations that measured levels of PM2.5 exceeding the environmental limit are located in eastern and western regions. In addition, above-limit figures were recorded at all stations in Kyushu, but none in Okinawa, the ministry said.

The data showed that atmospheric PM2.5 levels exceeded the limit in many regions even before the airborne particulate up to 2.5 micrometers in size flew in from heavily polluted Chinese regions early this year.
