Abe urges help for working parents

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Thursday his government will consider a range of policy measures to help companies that actively support employees with children.

Abe made the comments after visiting an in-house nursery at cosmetics maker Shiseido Co. in Minato Ward, Tokyo, and spoke with employees who use the facility.

Abe told reporters afterward that the visit helped him once again remember how the needs of workers with children vary.

“Our role is to provide them with options,” he said.

Abe has stated that he wants to reduce the number of children on nursery waiting lists to zero to help bring more women into the workforce.

Empress Michiko visited the facility in May 2009.
