Infertility treatment grants reviewed

JIJI

A health ministry panel is looking at establishing a new set of criteria for offering infertility treatment grants, aiming to reach a conclusion by next March.

The panel of experts, which met for the first time Thursday, will study questions like the age limit for couples who can receive government subsidies and details of the assistance.

Under the current program, couples who receive infertility treatment that is not covered by public health insurance, such as in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection, can get up to ¥150,000 in subsidies per trial twice a year over a five-year period. While couples with combined income above a set level are not eligible, there is no age limit.
