Nikkei briefly tops 13,000, at 4½-year high

The benchmark Nikkei stock index on Friday ended at its highest level since September 2008 after briefly topping the 13,000 mark, buoyed by the Bank of Japan’s bolder-than-anticipated easing steps.

The Nikkei 225 stock average finished up 199.10 points, or 1.58 percent, from Thursday at 12,833.64, after soaring as high as 13,225.62 at one point. Share prices were boosted by a tumbling yen, which sank to a 3½-year low against the dollar in New York trading late Thursday, after jumping as high as 97.05 earlier Friday. The greenback was trading below ¥93 before the BOJ announcement.
