The government is making arrangements to invite Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to Tokyo in mid-April, according to government officials.

It is hoping to arrange a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Suu Kyi if she can visit sometime between April 12 and April 21, when Myanmar's Parliament is in recess, the officials said.

It would be Suu Kyi's first visit to Japan since 1986.

She was a visiting scholar at Kyoto University from 1985 to 1986 before returning home to Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, and becoming an iconic opposition leader.

Suu Kyi, head of the National League for Democracy, has traveled abroad extensively since she was released in November 2010 from years of house arrest. She is now also a member of Myanmar's Parliament.

Since last June, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate has visited such nations as Norway, Britain, the U.S. and South Korea.
