Attacks in Nigeria kill at least 23

Motorcycle-riding gunmen on Tuesday sprayed bullets into a group of men playing checkers in the northern Nigerian hub of Kano, killing at least five and wounding two, police and residents said.

“We have just evacuated five dead bodies and two seriously injured people from the scene of the attack,” a police officer said, adding that witnesses had counted nine attackers on three motorcycles.

Earlier Tuesday, gunmen believed to be from the Boko Haram Islamist extremist group opened fire at a market in northeastern Nigeria, killing 18 people, a local official said.
