Delhi gang-rape confessions ‘coerced’

A defense lawyer accused Indian police Thursday of beating confessions out of the five men charged with murdering and gang-raping a young student aboard a bus in New Delhi as they were due to appear in court again.

Speaking before a hearing at which a magistrate was expected to transfer the case to a fast-track court, M.L. Sharma said his clients had been beaten while in custody and were innocent.

Sharma is defending three of the six defendants, one of whom will be tried as a juvenile. The three are expected to plead not guilty to a string of charges over the brutal attack on a moving bus Dec. 16.
