BRUSSELS – The European Union on Monday indicated it is ready to launch full-fledged negotiations with the incoming new Liberal Democratic Party-led government on concluding an economic partnership agreement for free trade.
A statement from the EU said it hopes to open the EPA talks with the incoming government, intensify cooperation between the two sides on shared challenges and work together to help return the global economy to sustainable growth. “Above all, we wish to affirm our continued friendship and solidarity with the people and government of Japan,” the statement said.
The EU agreed in November to launch full-fledged EPA negotiations with Japan. The EU and Japan are expected to declare the start of the talks at their regular summit early next year.
