Emperor, Empress arrive in Kyoto

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko arrived in Kyoto by shinkansen Monday for a visit to the region and the Emperor Meiji mausoleum.

The Imperial Couple were scheduled to visit Manshuin Monzeki, a large temple serving the Tendai sect of Buddhism, and attend a tea ceremony hosted by officials of the Imperial Household Agency to celebrate the Emperor’s 77th birthday two years ago.

On Tuesday, the Emperor and Empress will visit Fushimi no Momoyama no Misasagi, the mausoleum that houses the body of Emperor Meiji, who passed away 100 years ago. After worshiping at the Imperial tomb, they will visit a welfare facility for the disabled.They will return to Tokyo on Wednesday.
