OSAKA – Sharp Corp.’s new advanced liquid crystal display panel will likely be used for smartphones manufactured by other companies, according to a Sharp executive.
In talks with reporters Wednesday, the executive didn’t name the rival makers that will receive the indium gallium zinc oxide, or IGZO, panel from Sharp, but did say the rival smartphones will hit the market around January-March next year. The IGZO panel is energy-efficient and features high resolution.
The struggling electronics maker hopes the IGZO panel will help turn around its business. Sharp wants to expand sales of the panel by supplying it to rival firms.
Sharp’s smartphones and tablet computers with the IGZO panel will be released by NTT DoCoMo Inc. and KDDI Corp. before the end of next month.
