Exchange aids small power suppliers

A market will be started June 18 to allow trading in small amounts of electricity from unstable sources, the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy said Tuesday.

The new market is designed to promote efficient use of excess power from sources such as wind and cogeneration while easing the tight electricity supply situation.

It will be set up at the Japan Electric Power Exchange in Tokyo, which currently serves as a trading floor mostly for major power companies.

The Japan Electric Power Exchange requires sellers to supply at least 1,000 kw, while the new market will have no such requirement.
