State seeks stiffer sentence for killer

Prosecutors filed an appeal Monday against a district court-imposed 18-year prison term for a part-time cram school teacher who fatally stabbed a 12-year-old female student in 2005 at the school in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture.

The Kyoto District Court rejected the prosecutors’ demand that Yu Hagino, 24, be imprisoned for life over the murder of Sayano Horimoto, a sixth-grader, determining that the defendant has development problems, had mental trouble at the time of the crime and surrendered afterward by making an emergency call to police.
