"Le Petit Monde Dans Le Coffret"
at the Y Art Gallery is a collaboration between copperplate print artist, and Osaka native Maiko Otsubo and Osaka-based paper-product company Murakamishiki Kougyousho. Murakamishiki Kougyousho produces haribako, boxes used to gift wrap quality items. To make the haribako more impressive, the surfaces of the boxes are decorated with high-quality paper, material or leather. Maiko Otsubo is an Osaka University of Arts graduate who, in 1999, went to France to learn printing techniques at Atelier Contrepoint, formerly known as Atelier 17, a printing shop founded in 1927 by British painter and printmaker S. W. Hayter (1901-88). For this exhibition, three different colored haribako — pink, gray and blue — are covered with copperplate prints created by Otsubo. Otsubo matches the colors with three themes — amour (love) for pink; ensemble (together) for gray; and bonheur (happiness) for blue. Each box also contains three prints that viewers can take out to look at more closely; till Apr. 25.
