The Japan Times to participate in the UN SDG Media Compact to raise awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Tokyo, February 10, 2020 —The Japan Times, Ltd. (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. Representative: Takeharu Tsutsumi)　signed an agreement with the United Nations to participate in the SDG Media Compact on Jan. 28, 2020.

The United Nations has called on major media outlets to join the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Media Compact and cooperate to increase participation in achieving the SDGs. The Japan Times will continue to work as a media to resolve 17 issues of the SDG, such as poverty, climate change and hunger.

◆ About SDG
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by world leaders at the historic Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015. The SDGs, which cover a wide range of factors, from health to gender equality, education, ending the world of all forms of poverty, combat inequality, climate changes and ensuring that no one is left behind. It plays a role in bringing initiatives together.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by all United Nations members, and 169 related targets, include extreme poverty, inequality. It addresses urgent issues facing modern times, such as climate changes. Achieving the SDGs by 2030 also requires concerted action by other actors, including civil society, businesses, international organizations, religious groups, and individuals.
The media plays a particularly important role in fostering public dialogue, supporting sustainable development and developing knowledge on how to achieve the SDGs. The United Nations has called on major media outlets to join the SDG Media Compact and cooperate in increasing participation in achieving the SDGs. Each participating media organization can define its own action method based on the Media Compact in consultation with the United Nations while observing its values, rules and policies.
