Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry on Monday asked a North Korean diplomat to leave the country by the end of the day over illegal activities, according to diplomatic sources.

Han Son Ik, named by local media as the first secretary of the North Korean Embassy in Dhaka, purportedly tried to import tobacco and electronic products worth 35 million taka ($450,000) into Bangladesh without following the proper processes.

Customs officials seized the consignment from the city's Inland Container Depot in July.

After receiving a complaint from the National Board of Revenue, the Foreign Ministry took action against Han for attempting to import goods in violation of diplomatic norms.

In March 2015, Dhaka expelled another North Korean diplomat, Son Young Nam, who was also first secretary of the North Korean Embassy in Dhaka, after he was caught smuggling over $1 million worth of gold into Bangladesh.
