A 47-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his former girlfriend around 10 years ago in Fukuoka Prefecture, police said Saturday.

Kazuhiko Yoshidomi is suspected of fatally stabbing Katsumi Shiga in the city of Kurume sometime between the fall of 2004 and spring of 2005, police said, adding that the suspect admitted to the murder of the woman as well as a baby boy believed to be their son, Kazuto.

Based on Yoshidomi's confession, authorities discovered the bodies of Shiga, who was believed to be 28 or 29 years old, and the baby near the suspect's house in Imari, Saga Prefecture. The identity of the woman was confirmed through DNA testing.

According to police, a child counseling center notified police in October 2011 that Kazuto did not show up for the entrance ceremony of an elementary school in the April of that year and the mother's whereabouts also remained unknown.

It was not immediately clear why police did not take action at the time. It was only recently that police questioned Yoshidomi about the matter and during interrogation he told them that he killed the two and buried their bodies near his home.
