Nursery school waiting list tally down to 44,118: ministry

JIJI

The number of children waiting to enter nursery schools fell to 44,118 as of Oct. 1, 2013, according to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry.

The drop of 2,009 children from the previous year means the number has dropped for three consecutive years, the ministry said Friday.

Efforts by municipalities to shorten the number of children on waiting lists have made progress, but the figure itself remains high, a ministry official said, adding that it will continue to work on increasing nursery school capacity.

The ministry has set a target of reducing the number of children waiting to zero by fiscal 2017 ending in March 2018.
