Suntory to expand Yamanashi stills

Suntory Liquors Ltd. will expand its whiskey distillery in Hokuto, Yamanashi Prefecture, at a cost of about ¥1 billion to meet growing demand, company officials said.

The unit of food and beverage giant Suntory Holdings Ltd. will install two more pairs of stills that will start operating in September.

Production capacity at the distillery, which currently has six pairs of stills and mainly makes the Hakushu brand, will rise 30 percent after the expansion.

In 2013, combined sales of three of the high-quality whiskeys made by Suntory Liquors — Yamazaki, Hakushu and Hibiki — rose 16 percent over the previous year.

Last year, the company expanded its distillery in Shimamoto, Osaka Prefecture, with an investment of ¥1 billion.
