New Tokyo Gov. Yoichi Masuzoe has expressed a desire to visit Sochi during the Olympic Games to meet International Olympic Committee officials as the Japanese capital gears up to host the 2020 Summer Games.

"Arrangements need to be made with the whole metropolitan government, but I would like to go there, even for a day, if possible, and hold talks with people in the International Olympic Committee as the governor of the (2020) Olympic host city," he told reporters on Tuesday after receiving certification from the election committee of his victory in Sunday's gubernatorial election.

Masuzoe succeeded Naoki Inose, a novelist-turned-governor who resigned in December as a way of taking responsibility for a financial scandal that broke late last year.

On Wednesday, the new governor will meet with metropolitan officials in Tokyo to outline his plan for managing municipal operations and hold a news conference.
