METI to help firms develop medical gear

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has asked for ¥4.55 billion in its fiscal 2014 budget request to boost financial support for the development of medical equipment by small and midsize manufacturers.

The ministry hopes the funds will help revitalize the domestic medical industry as part of the growth strategy of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government. METI also plans to support the development of devices that use technologies from makers in various sectors.

Some 50 items will be chosen, selected from plans that makers will map out in cooperation with medical institutions to develop devices that will raise the quality of treatment and diagnosis.
