PARIS – Anti-terrorism judges on Friday charged a recent convert to Islam who stabbed a French soldier last weekend with “attempted murder linked to a terrorist enterprise.”
The 22-year-old was arrested Wednesday after the stabbing of a soldier in the busy Paris commercial complex and transport hub of La Defense. The suspect was identified only as Alexandre D.
The man admitted after his arrest that he had attacked Pfc. Cedric Cordiez, who has since been discharged from the hospital. Video footage from the shopping center showed the suspect buying two knives an hour prior to the attack May 25, and praying eight minutes before the incident.
Reports have emerged that the suspect had previously attracted the attention of local police for his “behavior,” but this information was not shared with France’s intelligence services. This prompted French President Francois Hollande on Friday to urge better intelligence coordination.
