Aflac Inc. said Friday a computer-system malfunction has affected a total of 5,000 insurance transactions worth a combined ¥1.8 billion, including insurance money payments.

The insurer said it fixed the system malfunction Friday afternoon.

Problems started Wednesday night during data processing relating to death insurance, individual annuity and other financial products, and came to affect the system by early Thursday morning, Aflac said.

Affected services included insurance money payouts, refunds, acceptance of new policy applications and changes to policyholders' addresses. Insurance money payments were later made manually to relevant bank accounts, it said.

The company offered in a statement a "profound apology" for the trouble.
