Sales of Summer Jumbo lottery tickets rose 11.8 percent from last year to ¥100.2 billion thanks to a record-high jackpot of ¥400 million, preliminary data from an association that issued tickets shows.
Demand for the lottery tickets, which were on sale from July 9 to 27 priced at ¥300, increased for the first time since 2009, according to the association, which comprises prefectural governments and major cities.
The jackpot was raised this year to the equivalent value of 1.33 million tickets. Previously, first prize was limited to 1 million times the price of tickets.
Sales grew as more people have become aware of the good causes the proceeds are used for, according to the association and other sources.
