Budget overlaps on energy policy face ax

Officials from the industry, Environment and other ministries met Monday to eliminate redundancies in their fiscal 2013 budget requests in the field of energy conservation and renewable energy promotion.

The ministries “need to tackle energy and environment issues under a national strategy,” Environment Minister Goshi Hosono told the meeting.

Hosono said it is meaningless for the agencies to cling to their own budgets in the field and called on them to cooperate.

“What is needed as a policy is for Japan to get fully united on promoting the use of renewable energy and to make efforts to save energy and electricity,” he said.

The meeting was held in response to the Government Revitalization Unit’s request to scrap inefficiency and prioritize projects selected in a “shiwake” (budget screening) review of key policy measures held in November last year.
