Prime Minister Naoto Kan said Tuesday he will give up his salary as premier until the Fukushima nuclear crisis is under control.
The pay cut will start next month. He will still take his salary as a member of the Lower House.
"I think the government is responsible for pushing nuclear power as national policy," Kan said.
He also said the government will scrap the policy to increase nuclear power to half the total amount of energy production in Japan by 2030 from about 30 percent currently.
Kan said renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power and energy-saving by society as a whole will be the center of the new energy policy.
"We should make more efforts (to promote renewable energy) than before, and I would like to promote discussions to review the energy policy," Kan said.
The government is reviewing long-term energy policy after the March 11 quake and tsunami triggered the crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.
Kan said he talked to Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Banri Kaieda about the pay cut, indicating the METI chief may decide to forego his salary as well.
