The height of an advertisement can be a maximum of 51 cm and is calculated in half-cm units. The width of an advertisement is calculated in terms of columns. Each page in The Japan Times is divided into eight columns with the following widths:

Although our basic unit rate is 6,000 yen per col/cm, advertisers can benefit from our long-term discount plan. Simply put, the longer you advertise with us, the cheaper it gets. You can save up to 46 percent off the price of regular spot ads.

Here's how it works: If your ads total more than 100 column-centimeters per month and you run your ad for a minimum of three months, you are eligible for a discount. In order to qualify for the discount, all you have to do is enter into a contract with The Japan Times. The following chart shows how much you can save:

Example: If you run a two-column ad with a depth of 10 cm five times a month, the basic price would come to 600,000 yen per month (2 cols x 10 cm x 6,000 yen per col/cm x 5 = 600,000 yen). However, if you run the same ad for three months, the unit price drops to 4,700 yen. The price for three months is 1,410,000 yen or only 470,000 yen per month.
 

Running your ad in eye-catching color will cost a little more, depending on the number of colors. Consult the folllowing chart for prices:

1. Scheduling:
To place an advertisement in The Japan Times, you must submit a written application no later than seven days before the date that you wish the ad to appear. Special announcements are subject to other scheduling rules. Please note that this applies to advertisements in the Tokyo editions of The Japan Times. The Osaka office may have different deadlines.

2. Rates:
The same rates apply for all print runs.

3. Deadlines:

• For ads necessitating photo composition or paste-up:
  3 p.m., 7 business days prior to insertion
• For camera-ready copy (kanzen hanshita):
  3 p.m., 4 business days prior to insertion
• In case of black and white, positive film:
  noon, 3 days prior to insertion
• In case of black plus 1 color, negative film:
  5 p.m., 5 days prior to insertion
• In case of full-color, negative film:
  5 p.m., 7 days prior to insertion

4. Deliverables:
Once you have determined the size and timing of your ad, you will be required to supply to The Japan Times clear proof (kamiyaki) or camera-ready (kanzen hanshita) copy. Screen should be 85 lines, with a 10 percent or over ratio of screen tone. If you are submitting film, please have ready the following items:

• Black and white: 1 positive film
• One color: 2 negatives (one for black and one for color) plus 3 color samples
• Full color: 4 color-separated negatives (1 for black and 3 films for color -- red, yellow, blue) plus 3 color samples and 1 sample for each color -- red, yellow and blue

5. Copywriting:
The Japan Times also offers advertisement copywriting services. Use of these services will be billed separately from the cost of running the ad.

6. Cancellation charges:
Cancellation of bookings for ad insertions must be made in writing at least 3 business days prior to insertion. In the case of large ads (1/2 page or larger), 5 business days' notice is required. For cancellations after this time, 50 percent of the insertion rate is payable. Any cancellation, changes to copy or publication date instructions must be made in writing. Verbal confirmations are not accepted.

7. Borders:
The minimum border width for all advertisements is 1/10 mm.

8. Advertising space:
Minimum ad space is 5 cm x 1 col. Float ads in the classified ad section must be between 3 and 7 cm depth by 1 col. width. Column depth is as follows:

But depth in 2 to 6 columns is set at 35 cm or less when it is less than 50 cm.

9. Right to refusal:
The Japan Times reserves the right to reject any advertisement.

10. Notice:
In the Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kyushu and Shin-etsu (Nagano and Niigata prefectures) regions, and in some areas of the Chugoku Region, advertisements appear in the next day's edition.
