The Suntory Museum of Arts is celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of prominent Edo Period painter Tani Buncho. A painter of Kanto-region nanga (literati) style, Buncho's work features detailed Chinese landscapes and scenery inspired by traditional poems.
He was influenced by a number of schools of nihonga (Japanese style painting), as well as by Western-style painting, which led to his distinct style and a wide range of works. One of the highlights of the show is the complete set of Buncho's seven "Ishiyama-dera Engi Emaki Handscrolls," which is being shown for the first time since its complete restoration; July 3-Aug 25.
