Prosecutors’ fund abuse to stay hidden

The Sendai High Court ruled Tuesday that prosecutors misappropriated investigation funds — but rejected a demand by a citizens’ group that details of how the funds were used be disclosed.

In issuing the ruling upholding a lower court decision, presiding Judge Sadao Ono said there is a “strong suspicion” that the prosecutors illegally diverted the funds allocated for investigative and research activities between 1983 and 1993.

He also did not rule out the possibility they also misappropriated funds of this kind in 1998.

But Ono rejected the group’s demand that documents detailing how the money was used be disclosed. “Such a disclosure may have a negative impact on the prosecutors’ investigative activities,” he said.
