Cult member’s death sparks search

Police searched several locations Saturday in Tokyo in connection with the mysterious death earlier this month of a female former member of the Aum Shinrikyo cult.

A woman who lives in an apartment in Nerima Ward called police Sept. 11, saying the 36-year-old former Aum member was found dead in the apartment after taking medicine the night before, investigators said.

Police searched that apartment as well as several other locations.

The former member is believed to have joined a cult called Keroyon after leaving Aum, investigators said.

A 35-year-old man, another former Aum member who belongs to Keroyon, told police she died during an exercise in which she was beaten with a bamboo sword, the investigators said.
