Yokohama Mayor Fumiko Hayashi announced Sunday that the city would like to host the next round of a Japanese-led African development conference in 2019.

Hayashi unveiled the proposal to host the seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development at a press conference in Nairobi. The mayor will formally convey the plan to the Japanese government later.

"Yokohama is the Japanese city closest to Africa," Hayashi said. Yokohama hosted TICAD gatherings in 2008 and 2013.

Hayashi was visiting Nairobi to take part in an event related to the sixth TICAD meeting. The development conference has been held since 1993 and the Nairobi round was the first held outside Japan.
