Crown Prince Naruhito plans to attend meetings at the United Nations on water disasters and sanitation next month in New York, the Imperial Household Agency said Friday.

The prince has been asked by the U.N. to attend the Special Thematic Session on Water and Disasters and a meeting of the Secretary-General's Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation, Kyoji Komachi, grand master of the Crown Prince's Household, told a news conference. Both meetings are scheduled for mid-November.

Prince Naruhito, known for his expertise on water issues, has served as honorary president of the advisory board.

In 2013, he gave a keynote address at the session on water and disasters, talking about the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and ensuing tsunami that hit Tohoku and the ongoing reconstruction work in the region.
