The Nuclear Regulation Authority on Wednesday approved a report from an expert panel that a crush zone running beneath Kansai Electric Power Co.’s Oi nuclear plant in Fukui Prefecture is unlikely to move in the future.
NRA Chairman Shunichi Tanaka said that inspections of the F-6 crush zone were conducted properly, adding, “We want people to understand that the NRA has reached the decision by making utmost efforts.”
The F-6 crush zone is believed to be the longest one under the nuclear plant.
The experts’ group concluded that the F-6 crush zone is inactive because it had not moved geological layers that include 230,000-year-old volcanic ash.
Meanwhile, the group said that the NRA should study carefully whether other crush zones and faults under the Oi plant are active or not through the regulatory body’s ongoing safety examinations for idled reactors at the plant for their possible restart.
