NHK anchor held over alleged train groping

Takeshige Morimoto, who anchors a morning news program on NHK, has been arrested on suspicion of groping a young woman on a train, Tokyo police said.

Morimoto, 47, was arrested on a charge of indecent assault. He allegedly touched the breast of a 23-year-old female university student on a train on the Tokyu Denentoshi Line between 7:45 p.m. and 7:55 p.m. Wednesday.

Morimoto was drunk when he was nabbed and denied the allegation, according to the police. They quoted him as saying “I don’t remember touching her.”

Morimoto was on his way home after drinking with colleagues in Shibuya Ward, after he attended a meeting that ended around noon, according to sources. The victim seized Morimoto on the spot and handed him over to station staff, they said.

Morimoto, who was hired by NHK in 1990, anchors the “Ohayo Nippon” morning news show on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

NHK issued a statement saying the arrest of a news anchor is extremely regrettable and it is offering a “deep apology.”

NHK said it will look into the case and will take measures in a “severe manner” if Morimoto is found guilty.
