Wishing for safety in 2012, Tokyo Big Sight will be holding their annual dezomeshiki (new year's fire review) event this weekend. Organized by the Tokyo Fire Department, the event includes an array of fire engines and helicopters, which will be displayed to help promote safety.
The main attraction of the event is the Cirque du Soleil-like acrobatic performances by firefighters dressed in classic Edo Period (1603-1867) attire. The team dangles high above the ground and poses on traditional bamboo ladders supported only by a group of their peers.
These demonstrations of agility and strength showcase how firefighters used to prevent fires from spreading throughout cities, a danger that occurred often during the Edo Period.
Most of these demonstrations will be performed during a parade that starts at 9:35 a.m. The event runs until 2 p.m. at the hall.
Also at the event, fire departments look to demonstrate to the public new techniques they are working on to fight fires in modern times. They will also set up drills to help teach visitors about fire prevention.
