Prize-winning novelist Ichiro Shiraishi died Monday of pneumonia at a hospital in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture. He was 72.
Shiraishi, born in Pusan, South Korea, won the prestigious Naoki literary award in 1987 for “Kairoden” (“Sea Wolf Legend”), which is about Japanese pirates in the 16th century.
He had struggled with pneumonia after being diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus in 2002.
His sons, Kazufumi and Fumio, are also writers.
