Body of second brother found along Tochigi river

The second of two boys was found dead Thursday in Tochigi Prefecture, downriver from where his brother’s body was found earlier this week.

The boys were both allegedly slain by their dad’s friend.

The body of Kazuto Kobayashi, 4, was found around 9:20 a.m. Thursday along the Omoi River, some 6 km downstream from the sandbar where the body of his 3-year-old brother, Hayato, was found Tuesday. The river borders the town of Nogi and the city of Oyama.

Police had been searching for the brothers since they were reported missing Saturday.

They identified the body based on a red T-shirt the boy was wearing at the time he disappeared.

According to police, the body was discovered lying face up on the left bank about 8 km downriver from the bridge where Akihiro Shimoyama confessed to having thrown the pair off alive.

Shimoyama, with whom the two boys and their father, Yasunori Kobayashi, 40, had been living, was arrested Sunday night on suspicion of abducting the brothers.

Shimoyama, 39, was reportedly unhappy about the three living at his apartment. He told investigators that he beat the children before throwing them off the bridge, police sources said earlier.

Police plan to press murder charges. It is believed Shimoyama had earlier abused the two boys.
