Child murders net mother five years

A 34-year-old woman was sentenced to five years in prison Monday for strangling her two children late last year in a murder-suicide attempt.

Presiding Judge Hideyuki Suzuki of the Mito District Court said in handing down the ruling that while Noriko Iimura’s actions were cruel and malicious, there was some room for sympathy. Prosecutors had demanded 10 years in prison.

Iimura was found guilty of strangling her 4-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son with an electric cord between 12:10 a.m. and 12:45 a.m. Dec. 10.

She then slashed her own wrists in an attempt to kill herself.

Her lawyer maintained that she was mentally unstable at the time, but the judge rejected this argument, pointing out that she had left her parents a suicide note and was thus thinking clearly and capable of telling right from wrong.
