Aeon to alter incorrect beef labels

Supermarket chain operator Aeon Co. said Saturday it will temporarily change the way it labels beef products, with prefectural identification replaced with information on whether the beef is from cattle raised abroad or domestically.

Aeon is acting because beef from 167 cows identified as having been raised in Hyogo Prefecture turned out to have come from other prefectures, the company said.

The beef in question was supplied by Itoham Foods Inc. between June and September and was sold at 31 stores, mainly in Hyogo Prefecture.

Aeon said it will resume identification by prefecture when it can confirm where the livestock for its beef products was raised.
