Canon Inc. Chairman Fujio Mitarai and veteran actor Tetsuya Watari are among the 4,193 Japanese recipients of this year's autumn decorations for their contributions to society, the government said Sunday.

In addition to the Japanese, 49 foreigners from 31 countries and territories will be honored. They include former U.S. Ambassador Thomas Schieffer, 66, and former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, 74.

The others include former Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Masahiro Futahashi, 71, former Justice Minister Jinen Nagase, 70, and former Supreme Court Justice Yuki Furuta, 71.

Of the Japanese, 1,810, or 43.2 percent, are from the private sector and 347 are women.
