Toyota’s China sales back on track, up 9% in June

Toyota Motor Corp. said its sales of new automobiles in China increased 9.0 percent in June from a year earlier to 76,900 units, beating the 0.3 percent growth in the previous month.

The result marks a full recovery of Toyota’s China sales, which plunged in September 2012 when the dispute between Japan and China over the Senkaku Islands flared up.

For all of 2013, Toyota aims to sell more than 900,000 units, up 7 percent from the previous year.

Toyota’s sales in China in the six months to June slipped 5.8 percent year on year to 416,900 units, the company said Tuesday.

Amid the heightened tensions, anti-Japanese demonstrations in China led to many Japanese auto outlets and vehicles being attacked and vandalized.

But Japanese models’ popularity basically remained unhurt. By May this year, Toyota, Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. all had enjoyed turnarounds in sales on a year-on-year basis.
