Yemen foils bid to blow up pipeline

The Yemeni Army on Sunday foiled an attempt by an al-Qaida-linked suicide bomber to blow up a strategic pipeline that takes gas from central fields to southern maritime terminals, an official said.

Soldiers opened fire on a vehicle that was speeding toward a gas pumping station 80 km northwest of the Belhaf export terminal on the Gulf of Aden, killing the driver, an army official said. “The bomb-laden vehicle was driven by an al-Qaida suicide bomber,” he said.

Gunmen also traded fire with soldiers near another pumping station 10 km to the north of Belhaf, the official added.
