Japan’s welfare recipients hit record high for ninth month

The number of people on welfare came to 2,153,642 in January, up 2,477 from the previous month, resetting a record high for the ninth month in a row, the welfare ministry said Wednesday.

The number of households on welfare also stood at a record high of 1,572,966, according to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry.

Among households affected by the March 2011 disasters, 1,520 received welfare benefits during the period through February this year, according to the ministry.

The ministry plans to submit a bill to revise the welfare benefit law during the current session of the Diet to help recipients find jobs and tighten penalties on unqualified payments.
