Mobile carriers in rival OS bids

Mobile phone carriers NTT DoCoMo Inc. and KDDI Corp. are involved in separate international efforts to develop new smartphone systems aimed at taking on their rivals who control 90 percent of the global market.

DoCoMo, Fujitsu Ltd., Britain’s Vodafone PLC and seven other companies are part of an alliance led by South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co. and U.S. chipmaker Intel Corp. to develop the Tizen OS.

KDDI has joined about 20 telecom firms in Europe and South America to further Mozilla’s Firefox OS.

The moves to support those open-source systems are designed to give phone operators and device makers the freedom to customize software to differentiate their services and applications.
