WAKAYAMA – Police arrested a 19-year-old youth Wednesday on suspicion of murdering his father and torching their house in Hashimoto, Wakayama Prefecture, on Tuesday night.
Police said the son turned himself in Wednesday morning and confessed to killing his father, Masaru Shimizu, 54, and setting fire to the two-story house at around 11 p.m. Tuesday.
The son is the victim’s second son. His name was withheld because he is a minor.
The youth handed over a survival knife he said he used to murder his father, according to police.
A male corpse was found in the rubble of the house, which was completely gutted by the fire. The body has yet to be identified but is believed to be that of the father, police said.
According to police, the son told investigators he had quarreled with his father over his older brother and stabbed him in the head and back, then spread kerosene in the house and set it ablaze.
The son fled the scene on his scooter and traveled to neighboring Osaka Prefecture, but returned and surrendered, police quoted him as saying.
His 23-year-old brother received a suspended prison sentence for trying to murder the youth at their home in April.
