AOMORI – A municipal hospital in Aomori Prefecture put medical information on 53 patients who underwent heart surgery there on a Web site without the consent of some of them, a hospital administration official admitted Monday.
The Internet site is run by a study group of doctors of Hachinohe City Hospital’s cardiovascular disease division. The site was linked to the hospital’s home page.
The patients’ medical records, including diagnosis, X-ray photos, the initials of their surnames and given names, sex, age and other data were posted between March 2001 and the beginning of last week, the official said.
The 53 patients were operated on at the hospital between 2000 and 2003. The hospital official said doctors received verbal consent for posting the information on the Internet from 18 of the 53 patients, but no written agreements were signed.
