Shizuoka vending machine explodes

Kyodo

A vending machine here exploded early Thursday, and investigators are speculating a device may have caused the blast.

A motorist notified police at around 2:10 a.m. that one of the vending machines in front of construction firm Warashina Kensetsu Kogyo had exploded. When officers arrived they found vending machine parts and products strewn about the area.

No faults were detected in any of the other 16 machines at the location, and police are investigating whether the explosion was caused by failed circuitry or was triggered deliberately.

At the time of the incident, the 70-year-old father of Yukitaka Warashina, the president of the construction firm, was sleeping in the company office.

Police quoted him as saying that he slept through the explosion.
