Lebanon asks for financial aid

Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri on Friday asked for Japan’s financial support to help his country’s debt reduction efforts and financial reforms.

In talks with Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, Hariri asked Japan to participate in an international donor’s conference for Lebanon later this year under the initiative of France, according to a Foreign Ministry official.

Koizumi was quoted as replying that Japan will consider what it can do, but he stopped short of promising to send a delegation to the conference, citing Japan’s tight financial condition.
